Ireland is a key location for the global healthcare industry.

Within the Pharmaceutical Industry, thirteen of the top fifteen companies in the world have substantial operational bases in Ireland , with fifteen of the worlds' twenty five leading medical technology companies also located there.

The pharmaceutical cluster in Ireland is supported by a sophisticated infrastructure of serviced sites and public utilities as well as a network of specialised support companies and services. Many of the pharmaceutical companies in Ireland have established multiple activities there and in recent years the sector has become increasingly integrated there. Early investment in fine chemical plants producing bulk active materials has been followed by investment in finished product pharmaceuticals. Many plants are now engaged in product development for Irish and overseas companies.

The Irish based Medical Technologies sector employs over 22,000 people in 110 companies with sales in excess of €4billion annually and an annual growth rate approaching 10%. As a result, this sector in Ireland is now comparable in scale to the world's largest clusters in Minnesota and Massachusetts . There is also an emerging indigenous SME sector both in sub-supply and own products.

In addition to numerous other high technology manufacturing projects locating in Ireland, an increasing number of existing facilities are now integrating R&D activities, and many are adding additional global support functions such as shared financial and IT support services.

Three decades of continuous investment have helped to make Ireland Europe 's leading location for healthcare manufacturers. This, in turn, has stimulated the emergence of an indigenous cluster of innovation-led venture capital funded technology companies that are winning leading positions in international markets.
